Summary of the Role’s Main Purpose

To instigate, develop and manage a continuous improvement programme of Sainsbury’s quality management framework for all Sainsbury’s own brand products.
To lead a team of field based depot and supplier quality inspectors, working in partnership with Sainsbury’s Product Technical, Depot and Store management teams, to ensure suppliers and products meet Sainsbury’s requirements for safety, quality, legality and ethical standards thereby protecting customers and the brand.

Principle Accountabilities

• To identify, by working with the technical teams and all relevant interdependencies, continuous improvement opportunities for the Sainsbury’s quality management framework.
• To lead a team of Product and Supplier Quality Inspectors to deliver a programme or proactive and reactive supplier audits, inspecting product, quality systems and production and providing timely feedback on findings at supplier, depot and store level to drive the quality of Sainsbury’s branded products.
• To direct the Supplier and Product Quality Inspectors, working with the relevant category teams, to respond to and deliver specific initiatives relevant to their product s and suppliers to drive quality within their supply chain.
• To manage the investigation and resolution of serious product safety concerns including serious incidents, out of specification results and customer complaints at supplier, product, supply chain or retail.
• To identify and build a network of trained contractors who can support driving quality improvements within Sainsbury’s supply base when required.
• To develop management information and performance reports that contribute to the overall supplier KPI reports for Sainsbury’s brand supplier performance management that drive a continuous improvement culture.
• To drive the resolution of identified of quality issues with Senior Depot & Supply Chain management, on all aspects affecting their operation and quality issues arising in order to deliver consistent standards of quality.
• To manage the supplier due diligence framework associated with ensuring relevant supplier facing technical policies are in place and operational thereby ensuring Sainsbury’s maintains the highest standards of safety and legality.
• To develop and deliver a programme of technical training for the Sainsbury’s brand division to ensure colleagues are fully skilled in supplier auditing and management
• To provide clear and motivational leadership to the team members and that all field-based colleagues are kept informed and feel part of the Sainsbury’s Brand division through providing a smooth communications route from the SSC to the wider team. To act as a role model so creating a culture of highest standards and attention to detail, managing internal and external resources effectively and within budget constraints.

Measures of Success

• Own brand product quality issues assessed with results accurately reported in a timely manner that deliver quality improvements.
• All supplier visits thoroughly documented with clear actions that are followed up in a timely manner.
• Resources reviewed to ensure fit for purpose at all times
• Positive Talkback results/feedback from the team.
• All of the team’s activities achieved within budget each year.
• Cost recovery

Core Areas of Knowledge, Skills & Experience

• Relevant degree – Food Technology or related science.
• First-hand experience of a Product Technologist/Product Technical Manager role – ideally across a range of product categories.
• Extensive auditing experience within the food industry
• Experience and/or knowledge of technical and quality management processes within supply base.
• People management experience – ideally including managing field-based teams across range of grades.
• High standards for self and others including strong attention to detail.
• IT literate – including use of Inspire, Microsoft Office programmes and Greenlight QC (desirable).
• Influencing and Communicating
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Analytical thinking
• Extensive food industry experience
• Qualified Lead Assessor
