Summary of the Role’s Main Purpose

To input into and support the Buyer in executing the strategy for a given group of products within a category and to achieve optimum cost through effective negotiation and supplier Management. 


Principle Accountabilities

  • To execute the sourcing and selection strategy for a given group of products based around the category strategy in conjunction with cross functional disciplines
  • Responsible for range optimisation: opportunities to maximise margin through product configuration, placement, dressing opportunities, range and space trading intensities intensity
  • To understand the in-store experience and impact the product ranges have on customers and store colleagues in order to inform future decisions.
  • To achieve optimum cost through effective negotiation and supplier management.
  • To identify the most cost effective global sourcing routes working with the supplier and logistics team.
  • Understanding of sales & profit variables and use of relevant levers to trade effectively. Eg. Product placement, positioning, price, promotions, POS (point of sale) and PR.
  • Accountable for adherence to the buying milestones within the agreed critical path.
  • To have customer / competitor awareness in your range through competitive shopping in order to inform decision making and implement buying levers appropriately.
  • Demonstrate high levels of process compliance and data integrity.
  • To build a commercial, customer focussed range through competitor bench marking and trend direction in line with agreed corporate compliance requirements (including legal, ethical and quality measures).
  • To have responsibility for administrative duties and approvals, sample management, supplier and internal administration.
  • Responsible for recommending and inputting to  Plannograms, Pricing, Promotional activity, Supplier selection (and de-listing) as appropriate to the product area
  • To confirm product detail and administration post sign off to suppliers in line with the critical path.

  • Delivery of commercial targets measured through achievements in line with plan
  • Timely and profitable NPD delivered to category seasonal plan
  • Demonstrates the Sainsbury’s values
  • Provide a profitable range in a timely manner which meets sales and stock targets
  • Deliver a range which works visually instores to agreed guidelines
  • Work within budget to increase sales whilst reducing markdown
  • Delivery of cost targets measured against cost index
  • Maximises trading intensities 

Resources available to the Job-holder and key interfaces

  • RMS, RDW and Crystal Reporting, Buyers Workbench in some areas
  • Business planning, Group merchandising, Buying teams, Merchandise Planning,  Trading & Merchandising Support team,  Pricing & promotions analyst, Buying Administrator or shared administrative support
  • Systems support and relevant training
  • Progress Meetings, Team Meetings
  • Guidance and support from line manager

Level of Decision-making Authority

Present recommendations for sign off (by a Buyer or Senior Buyer) prior to implementation, in the following areas:

  • Range
  • Plannograms
  • Pricing
  • Promotional activity
  • Supplier selection (and de-listing)
  • Ability to approve product standards
