Business area: Logistics

We’d all like amazing work to do, and real work/life balance. That’s waiting for you right here. Supply Chain and Logistics are the engine room for getting thousands of products from farms and factories, through the business and to our millions of customers every day. We plan around events from barbecue weekends to Sunday roasts, and who wants oven-ready cauliflower cheese to those who prefer to make it from scratch. Insight and data are everything. But so is judgement — if there’s an issue or ambiguity anywhere, we’re the first to spot it. There’s a big transformation going on. That calls for people who champion change, bring others with them, collaborate and communicate. Because those people can go a very long way.

Do you have experience of working in a logistics environment with an automation focus, extensive knowledge of engineering and system processes and procedures and an understanding of the legislation that impacts on engineering, technical and systems? Then make the move to Sainsbury’s and let your talent shine, playing a vital technical development role that will help ensure our shelves are packed full of everything from toilet rolls to prosecco to toothpaste - whenever they’re needed.

You don’t get from being a small shop in 1869 to one of the UK’s most loved retailers without a passion for innovation and a relentless pursuit for better. And that’s where you come in because, right now, we’re looking for a Technical Development Manager to join our Operational Execution, Supply Chain & Logistics team at our distribution centre.

Keeping our shelves full for our customers depends on us having a terrifically tight team, whether on the shop floor or at our distribution centre, where this particular role is based. Your challenge will be to lead and manage systems, technical, operational efficiency colleagues and our engineering teams. You’ll also need to liaise with business stakeholders to ensure requirements are fully understood and delivered in-line with BAU operation or longer-term project activity. Working closely with the wider supply chain & Logistics on end-to-end depot projects or proposing annual budget spends in relation to depot automation will be important too. In short, you’ll be instrumental in helping to shape our use of all things technical and ensuring your teams have the right resources to implement efficiencies right across the depot.

So, what do you need to succeed? A sharp commercial focus, coupled with a good understanding of all technical aspects of logistics, including the use of automation and the wider system architecture/infrastructure is essential. You’ll also need the ability to inspire, engage and communicate complex technical issues and solutions to a broad audience with a wide range of technical abilities. Someone who loves to make things happen, you’re genuinely excited about identifying and delivering simple solutions to complex problems - at pace. And, if you have a flair for identifying cost savings and efficiencies, are confident challenging the status quo or making critical time-pressured decisions and used to influencing stakeholders at a senior level of an organisation, we should definitely talk.

Sainsbury’s offer a genuine opportunity to progress. Indeed, you’ll gain exposure to different parts of the business which will help widen your skillsets and move into other roles in the future. Everyone gets their own personal development plan too, plus there’s a real commitment to wellbeing, D&I, values and work life balance.

The benefits are really good too – including paid holiday, a colleague discount card after 4 weeks that gives you and a second user 10% on most items in Sainsbury’s, Argos and Habitat. Throughout the year we regularly increase discount at Sainsbury’s and Argos to 15% as an additional benefit and food and hot drinks is provided in colleague areas in all our Depots

At Sainsbury’s, we’re a proud equal opportunities employer that values diversity and inclusion at every level of our business. Because when people bring their true selves to work, powerful innovation takes shape. Just know that whoever you are, we are your Sainsbury’s.
