Job Description

The Brand Planning team are responsible for the customer, brand and marketing strategies across the brands in the Sainsbury’s retail portfolio, including Sainsbury’s, Argos, Habitat, Tu and key own brands. As Brand Planning Manager, your role is to shape this strategic direction, balancing our Corporate and Commercial priorities, customer needs and brand aspirations.

As our Brand Planning Manager you’ll:


  • Develop the brand and marketing strategies for Sainsbury’s, Argos, Habitat, Tu and key own brands, including influencing high level Marketing investment choices. This will involve bringing together corporate, commercial and retail strategies with the voice of the customer to build brands that will drive the customer plan and ultimately the execution
  • Support in the development and refinement of the brand promise for each of our brands and help guide their rollout and guardianship
  • Support the Head of Brand Planning to identify, scope, develop and deliver to proof-of-concept stage some of the biggest brand strategy projects and propositions, that have the potential to have huge impact on our customers and our business
  • Independently and proactively identify opportunities to develop our brands, based on brand or market expertise
  • Proactively lead projects, developing recommendations for the evolution of the own brand proposition [in Sainsbury’s GM & Argos] in line with commercial plans; building strong own brand propositions and updating existing brands
  • Build strong stakeholder relationships across multi-facet teams, at all levels and to bring people together from different teams to deliver key projects
  • Be the voice of the customer, clearly representing their views & needs
  • Be focussed on the future and hand off at the right time to minimise overlap, while ensuring the agreed business owner has the support and knowledge needed to execute on plan and to budget


Our Brand Strategy Team would love to see:

  • Experience in brand strategy with the proven ability to develop & grow brands, driving real change
  • Experience of developing and setting marketing strategies
  • Experience of extracting customer insights (voice of customer) to develop and support strategy
  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of our business, brands, customers and the wider market
  • Track record of successfully project managing large, strategic projects on time and to budget
  • Experience of influencing and engaging multiple stakeholders from across different divisions with differing objectives and needs
  • Supplier / agency management experience
  • Good strategic thinking, critical thinking and problem solving abilities
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with good story telling skills to help bring others on the journey
  • A future leader who inspires and engages their project team and peers
  • Consistently demonstrates customer-centric clear thinking, strong commercial acumen and is able to judge when attention to detail is important
  • A self-motivated, problem solver who thrives under pressure with proven ability to deliver multiple projects at the same time. You need to be pro-active and able to drive the progress of your work
  • Proven skill in navigating ambiguous situations to deliver tangible, practical and commercially viable business impacts
  • Confidence in having difficult conversations and debating strategic questions
