Senior Product Manager – Commercial (9-month FTC)

We’re a multi-channel, multi-brand business serving millions of customers a day, with the UK’s largest loyalty scheme and an evolving set of commercial platforms. All this equals over 1.2 billion transactions each year, presenting a volume, depth, and complexity of data that few can match.

We don’t think we’re exaggerating when we say we have the most exciting data set in the country. And from the insights gained, we build scalable, high-performance products using cutting-edge technology that give our customers an amazing shopping experience – like our award-winning Smartshop app. In an inclusive, agile environment, you’ll have the space to be curious, to experiment, and to solve real-world challenges. And you’ll get to see your creations in the hands of hundreds of colleagues or millions of customers across the UK.

As a Senior Product Manager in Commercial, you will work closely with a variety of teams across commercial, digital, supply chain, logistics and retail to advance strategic cost initiatives by building products that enhance our customer experience and increase the efficiency and effectiveness of our commercial capabilities.

Our commercial platforms enable product setup, supplier partnerships, space and range optimisation, pricing and promotions, and display. They enable Sainsbury’s to serve millions of our customers, and we aim to offer an increasingly optimised customer experience. You’ll be shaping our future technology to help create the right proposition for Sainsbury’s customers wherever and however they might choose to shop with us. You’ll transform our ways of working and how we make decisions. You’ll enable connected planning and operational efficiency. You’ll bring together data integration, perceptive analytics, and flexibility to help Sainsbury’s achieve its full potential.

Role Overview:

In Sainsbury’s, a Cost Price can be defined as the price Sainsbury’s pays a Supplier for a product. Effective cost price management directly influences profitability, forecasting, stock valuation, competitive positioning, supplier relationships, day-to-day decision-making and more.

In this role, you will be responsible for the end-to-end journey of Cost Price management – from the technology that supports supplier negotiations to the internal use of cost data and everything in between.

Today, we are constrained by the technology we use and our Commercial landscape holds data across both legacy and modern technologies. We want to move our Commercial strategy to the Next Level by modernising and automating Cost technology, enabling better processes and more impactful tools for colleagues and customers.

Sainsbury’s is currently undergoing an ambitious programme of work to revolutionise its Core Commercial Systems with SAP. Within this role you will have the unique opportunity to lead the Cost transformation workstream, partnering with internal and external stakeholders to deliver complex system capabilities that meet both business and customer needs. You’ll have the ability to act upon colleague pain points, as well as experiment with and leverage new technology – in doing so, helping to improve the quality of data relied upon across the business every day.

Key Responsibilities:

  • You’ll have ownership and be accountable for the success of the Cost workstream in Sainsbury’s Core Commercial Transformation programme; working closely with internal and 3rd party SAP stakeholders to drive discovery and detailed design in preparation for build
  • Collaborating and facilitating key design decisions; representing product by always keeping the needs of colleagues who will be using the system front-of-mind
  • Clearly articulating the impact of design decisions on the end-user
  • Proactively managing and communicating risks/issues to remove blockers
  • Strategically prioritising and identifying dependencies with other workstreams
  • Supporting an agile Engineering team in partnership with an Engineering Manager, to drive Commercial data roadmaps and development
  • Coordinating and managing other ongoing deliverables outside of Core Commercial Transformation.

More about you:

  • Possess knowledge and understanding of a retail business and technology landscape
  • Comfortable dealing with complex retail products, process and systems – you are confident in your ability to ask the right questions to get up to speed quickly and develop a deep understanding of Commercial initiatives.
  • Technical fluency, with the ability to collaborate effectively with engineering teams and understand legacy as well as strategic technology solutions
  • Strong stakeholder management skills with the ability to influence and align diverse teams.
  • Judgement to make sometimes difficult and complex decisions at pace - comfortable dealing with ambiguous situations and helping drive toward clarity.
  • An ability to creatively solve problems and enthusiasm for delivering change through people and technology.
  • A high level of team contribution, seeking opportunities to provide input and support across the team and outside core areas of focus - a role model effective collaboration.
  • Clear understanding of Agile delivery and modern engineering team practices.
  • Knowledge of product development principles and methodologies.
  • Demonstrate great value behaviours and a growth mindset coupled with drive, determination, and desire.
