What you'll do
As a Senior Front-End Engineer, you’ll play a key role in designing and delivering high-quality, user-focused web applications that improve customer experiences, drive efficiency, and help reduce business costs. You’ll lead the development of front-end features, applying sound engineering principles and architectural thinking to ensure performance, security, and maintainability. Your expertise will support the team in managing risk and compliance, while your passion for quality will help shape a culture of excellence.
We use a variety of tech here and you need to be willing to pick up new tools and techniques. We’d also like you to be yourself – analytical, curious and unafraid to challenge the status quo. You’ll be a role model for best practices, championing a customer centric mindset and a passion for finding creative ways to solve problems, mentoring fellow engineers as a progressive member of the engineering community.

Who you are
As a Senior Engineer at Sainsbury's, you are a highly skilled and experienced professional in the field of engineering and technology. With a deep understanding of the retail business and the ever-evolving technology landscape, you have the expertise to design and implement high-quality solutions that drive value and align with Sainsbury's Group strategy. You possess a strong foundation in agile engineering practises and have a proven track record of leading and motivating engineering teams. With a results-oriented mindset and a focus on evidence-based decision-making, you thrive in a fast-paced, collaborative environment where you can make meaningful contributions to the success of Sainsbury's Tech.
- Strong proficiency in React 19, Next 15 and Typescript, with solid understanding of accessibility, responsive design, and performance best practices.
- Familiar with modern front-end tools and frameworks such as Tailwind, CSS modules, Fable component library, design tokens, Playwright, and Jest.
- Great expertise in engineering practice, including deep knowledge of engineering and architectural principles.
- Proven experience of software design and implementation, security, cloud, infrastructure as code and CI/CD.
- Self-drive and constantly striving to improve your team, division and peers through coaching and mentoring.
- Drive for advocacy of agile/lean delivery methodologies.
- A passion for enhancing your knowledge and curiosity in emerging tech.
- Display empathy and understanding in supporting colleagues in the team to deliver.
