What you'll do
As a Product Technologist for General Merchandise (GM) at Sainsbury's, you will be responsible for managing the delivery of all aspects of the Sainsbury's Brand product and technical plans for the GM product area. Working closely with suppliers, Sainsbury's Central Technical Operations (CTO) team, product developers, trading, supply chain, and retail teams, you will ensure the consistent production of high-quality products that meet specified standards and policies. Your role will involve driving the quality and technical agenda for GM products, implementing technical audits and ethical processes, and ensuring compliance with safety, legality, and quality standards to uphold Sainsbury's brand reputation. Additionally, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams to establish appropriate product ranges, optimise technical resources, and align processes to Sainsbury's ways of working, all while maintaining a focus on customer satisfaction and product excellence.
Who you are
As a Product Technologist for Sainsbury's, you are a dedicated professional with a strong background in technical aspects within the supply base or retail environment, coupled with a degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline. With a keen eye for detail and a focus on maintaining quality, safety, and legality standards, you demonstrate excellent judgement, drive, and influence in managing the delivery of all aspects of Sainsbury's Brand product and technical plans. Your ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams and stakeholders, while ensuring adherence to policies, legislation, and ethical audits, showcases your commitment to upholding brand reputation and delivering exceptional product quality that meets customer expectations.
Essential Criteria:
- Proven experience in a technical role within a retail and/or supply base environment, working directly with suppliers
- Strong knowledge of product safety, quality and legality, including UK legislation, quality systems, testing and audit processes
- Ability to work effectively within cross‑functional teams and operate structured governance or gated processes
- Demonstrated capability to manage technical risk, apply proportionate due diligence and protect brand reputation
- Strong communication, judgement and influencing skills, including with internal stakeholders and external suppliers
- High level of attention to detail, with the ability to deliver against KPIs and agreed timescales
