About the team

Our GM Design team creates customer-led product ranges across some of the UK’s most recognised home and general merchandise brands, including Habitat and Argos. Working closely with Buying, Product Technology, suppliers and external design partners, the team turns customer insight, market trends and commercial opportunities into products that are fresh, functional and relevant for our customers. This is a collaborative, fast-moving environment where creativity, pace and commercial thinking come together to shape ranges customers love.

More about the role

As Designer, you’ll help create and develop inspirational furniture ranges that support the category vision and brand ambition. You’ll take ownership of furniture design activity across your category area, translating customer needs, trend insight and market data into commercial product concepts, design specifications, colour palettes, trend boards and presentation materials.

You’ll manage the product development journey from concept through to launch, working with Buyers, Product Technologists, suppliers, sourcing team and internal/external design teams to keep activity on track against the critical path. Day to day, you could be producing design packs, reviewing samples, preparing for selection and sign-off meetings, completing competitor research, maintaining design/artwork files and ensuring PR and Marketing have the assets they need to tell the story behind each range. Where relevant, you’ll also coach and support an Assistant Designer, helping to grow capability within the team.

More about you

You’ll bring furniture product design and development experience, with a strong understanding of how to turn trends, customer insight and commercial opportunities into products that are deliverable, functional and brand relevant. You’ll be confident working with suppliers and cross-functional teams, and you’ll understand the importance of quality, safety, legal requirements and clear product differentiation in a retail environment.

You’ll be organised, collaborative and comfortable working to deadlines in a fast-moving environment. You’ll be able to present your ideas clearly, build trusted relationships with stakeholders and use tools such as Photoshop and Illustrator to create high-quality design outputs. A strong portfolio of relevant design work will help demonstrate your approach, creativity and ability to deliver commercial ranges for customers.

Essential criteria

  • Evidence of delivering furniture product design and development work from concept through to launch, shown through a relevant portfolio or examples of completed projects.
  • Working knowledge of furniture manufacturing processes, supplier engagement and translating design concepts into clear specifications or design packs.
  • Ability to use customer insight, market data, competitor research and trend information to inform commercial product design decisions.
  • Competent use of Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator to create design, artwork, trend, colour or presentation outputs.
  • Experience collaborating with cross-functional stakeholders, such as buying, product technology, technical/legal, suppliers or external design teams, to deliver activity against deadlines.
