Job Description

We’d all like amazing work to do, and real work-life balance. That’s waiting for you at Sainsbury’s. For a FTSE business, we move incredibly fast. When we’re not handling projects, we’re helping all corners of the wider group with what they’re trying to achieve. And around here, you can see the results of your work as soon as you walk into a store, which gives you a real sense of purpose and responsibility. Better still, the team around you will listen to your ideas and opinions, and you’ll have every chance to try something new. The sheer scale and complexity of our set-up means there’s always something else around the corner, and we’ll help and support you every step of the way. We’re trusted to get on with it. So get ready to make things happen here.

Why join us

There’s more to our Property team than bricks and mortar. We decide where the next Sainsbury’s should be, what type of outlet that looks like and then create something that lasts for decades. From location planning to market analysis, we manage the lifestyle of each physical asset all the way through to redevelopment or sale. That’s broader than most retailers and means decisions concerning hundreds of £millions. Which also means we have to be highly commercial, focused on outcomes, comfortable with ambiguity and happy to act at pace. We work smarter, very flexibly and we’re trusted to get on with it. So get ready to make things happen here.

We now have an exciting opportunity to join our team as an Assistant Estates Surveyor. You will have the chance to work with a cross-functional team of internal and external stakeholders, using your strong commercial acumen to optimise tenure and minimise costs across our estate. Joining us means being part of a dynamic organisation that values curiosity, collaboration, and continuous improvement. We provide support for your professional development, offer a range of training sessions, and give you the opportunity to work alongside specialist property management consultants. With our inclusive and supportive work environment, you will have the freedom to make decisions and contribute to strategic initiatives and business objectives.

What you'll do

In the role of Assistant Estates Manager, you will play a vital role in supporting the Head of Estates and Estates Manager in implementing the Estates strategy. Your main responsibilities will include actively managing the trading estate, ensuring critical dates are met and efficiently managed, and utilising your strong commercial acumen to drive down property costs through proactive management of rent reviews, lease renewals, and break options. You will collaborate with external property advisors and internal managers to minimise occupational costs and optimise tenure across the estate. Additionally, you will provide valuable support in handling landlord and tenant matters, generating and presenting papers to the Property Board, managing external agents, and facilitating effective communication with internal stakeholders and store managers. Your expertise will also be utilised in reviewing rating appeal settlements, assisting with internal projects, and delivering property solutions for leasehold stores. Through your diligent efforts, you will maintain accurate reporting of the portfolio and contribute to the overall success of the Estates division.

Who you are

As an Assistant Estates Manager, you are a dedicated professional with a passion for the retail property industry. Ideally with a property-related degree or equivalent qualification, you bring a strong understanding of estates management and a desire to contribute to the implementation of the company's estates strategy. You thrive in a fast-paced environment, where you can effectively prioritise and manage deadlines, work autonomously, and collaborate with both internal stakeholders and external partners. Your excellent communication skills allow you to relay complex technical information to a non-technical audience, and your curious and inquisitive nature drives you to continuously improve processes and seek opportunities for growth and learning. With your sound commercial awareness and ability to analyse situations and make balanced judgments, you are well-equipped to support the Head of Estates and contribute to the efficient management of the Sainsbury's property portfolio.
