Job Description

We’d all like amazing work to do, and real work-life balance. That’s waiting for you at Sainsbury’s. Corporate Services is made up of specialist teams, namely Legal, Information Security, Safety & Insurance, and Company Secretary & Share Management. While they’re distinct areas, we all deal with risk. So that covers how we identify risk to the business, people, stakeholders and shareholders, how we assess and evaluate the impact of risks, and how do we mitigate them or even accept them. What makes us different is that we have real exposure to other specialisms; we don’t operate in a silo and can move laterally into other opportunities. We also have an amazing leadership team — which is 50% women — and a genuine passion for Sainsbury’s as a brand and as a place to be. Which makes this a place where you should be.

Why join us
Joining Sainsbury's as a Data Protection Manager means becoming part of a dedicated team focused on ensuring the organisation's compliance with data protection legislation. You will have the opportunity to work closely with the Group Data Protection Officer and contribute to the development and implementation of privacy controls across the business. With a strong emphasis on promoting a culture of privacy compliance, you will play a key role in managing data protection impact assessments, providing guidance to stakeholders, conducting risk assessments, and delivering privacy training. This is an exciting opportunity to work in a dynamic environment, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and contribute to Sainsbury's commitment to protecting customer and colleague data.

What you'll do
As a Data Protection Manager at Sainsbury's, your role will primarily focus on supporting the Group Data Protection Officer in ensuring compliance with data protection legislation across the Sainsbury's Group. You will be responsible for managing and completing Data Protection Impact Assessments and Records of Processing Activities for the business. This will involve developing and managing the Data Protection Impact Assessment process and templates, assisting the business in completing assessments, and providing support on ad hoc data protection matters. Additionally, you will contribute to the design and implementation of legal and privacy controls, promote privacy and embed a culture of privacy compliance, and communicate with key stakeholders to gain support and buy-in for privacy initiatives. You will also play a vital role in conducting regular risk assessments, delivering privacy training and awareness activities, supporting incident response efforts, and monitoring project progress and milestones. With your subject matter expertise, legal qualifications, and strong analytical and communication skills, you will ensure that Sainsbury's maintains a robust and compliant data protection framework while driving change and fostering a privacy-focused culture within the organisation.

Who you are
As a Data Protection Manager at Sainsbury's, you are a highly knowledgeable professional with a legal qualification and subject matter expertise in data protection. With a minimum of 2 years' experience in working substantially on data protection matters, including data governance implementation and monitoring, you possess a deep understanding of complex organisational structures and the ability to navigate them effectively. Your strategic approach and excellent communication skills enable you to influence stakeholders, drive change, and ensure compliance with data protection legislation. With strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and a process-driven mindset, you take a proactive and outcome-oriented approach to managing data incidents, conducting risk assessments, and delivering high-quality responses to data subjects. Your passion, enthusiasm, and dedication make you an invaluable asset to the privacy function at Sainsbury's.

We are committed to being a truly inclusive retailer, so you’ll be welcomed whoever you are and wherever you work. Around here, there’s always the chance to try something new - whether that’s as part of an evolving team or somewhere else across the business - and we take development seriously and promise to support you. We also recognise and celebrate colleagues when they go the extra mile and, where possible, offer flexible working. When you join our team, we’ll also offer you an amazing range of benefits.
