Job Description

We’d all like amazing work to do, and real work-life balance. That’s waiting for you at Sainsbury’s. This is where you’ll enjoy a broad range of projects, no matter what your level, because our Corporate Affairs team is non-hierarchical and truly plugged in to the rest of the business. Whether it’s internal, external or government relations, you’ll have the chance to collaborate with everyone from food waste to health, or general merchandising to Nectar, in order to support some amazing campaigns. You’ll help build trust around Sainsbury’s with customers, senior stakeholders, media and more. And if non-linear progression is what you’re after, you’ll find opportunities are all around.

Corporate Affairs - Internal Communications Manager

Why join us

The Internal Communications Team is the engine room for communications across Sainsbury’s business, brands and channels, owning the communication of our strategy, priorities and progress and telling everyone across the business what they need to know.

As Internal Communications Manager, you will deliver communications on sensitive change and transformation initiatives. You’ll also work on projects across the full breadth of the Internal Comms team – from campaigns and operational guidance to reactive communications. This includes coming up with creative ways to connect with colleagues across our channels, writing copy and leadership messages for the CEO, members of the operating board and other leaders.

You’ll thrive on managing multiple projects and stakeholders, often with short deadlines and always be ready to suggest solutions or try something new. You’ll have the ability to keep focus under pressure, provide expert advice on our channels, create clear action plans and feel confident to challenge and suggest new ideas.

More about the role:

  • Working with our Senior Communications Managers, you will create and deliver communication plans and materials that engage all our colleagues in the role they play in delivering on our strategy, and that enable our leaders to unite their teams and execute the plan brilliantly
  • Work alongside our People division and other stakeholders to manage the communication of change projects, preparing cascade plans and messaging, and supporting the creation of scripts and presentations
  • Work collaboratively across the Internal Communications team and broader Corporate Affairs division so everyone understands the activities and opportunities coming up, enabling us to prioritise and coordinate projects and plans
  • Write communications for members of the operating board and other leaders as relevant, that demonstrate our progress against our strategy and how our business is adapting to meet changing shopping habits
  • You will ensure that all content ladders up to the wider strategic narrative and that every communication has a clear call to action
  • Ensure our communications have an open and honest style and that leadership communications feel authentic and personal

More about you:

  • Background in internal communications and experience of creating and delivering communication plans in large, complex and multi-location organisations, operating in rapidly changing markets
  • Organised and proactive – experienced at prioritising a busy agenda and responding calmly and quickly to changing situations and a level of ambiguity
  • Proven experience of handling large amounts of complex information and distilling this into compelling and easy to understand messages that stay focused on the big picture
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including experience of writing for a wide variety of different audiences
  • Excellent judgement and strong attention to detail

Benefits

As an Internal Communications Manager you’ll receive a host of great benefits. As well as a competitive salary and discretionary bonus, you will receive a huge range of learning and development opportunities, 25 days’ holiday, a save-as-you-earn scheme, pension and colleague discounts at Argos, Sainsbury’s and Habitat.

Work-life balance is important to us, so we offer our colleagues as much flexibility as possible in line with the needs of their role. We trust them to decide how and where they work, combining remote and collaborative working, and giving them plenty of time and space for life outside of work whilst delivering against our business goals.

We are committed to being a truly inclusive retailer, so you’ll be welcomed whoever you are and wherever you work. Around here, there’s always the chance to try something new whether that’s as part of an evolving team or somewhere else across the business - and we take development seriously and promise to support you. We also recognise and celebrate colleagues when they go the extra mile and, where possible, offer flexible working. When you join our team, we’ll also offer you an amazing range of benefits. Here are some of them:

Starting off with colleague discount, you'll be able to get 10% off at Sainsbury's, Argos, TU and Habitat after 4 weeks. This increases to 15% off at Sainsbury’s every Friday and Saturday and 15% off at Argos every pay day. We've also got you covered for your future with our pensions scheme and life cover. You'll also be able to share in our success as you may be eligible for a performance-related bonus of up to 10% of salary, depending on how we perform.

Your wellbeing is important to us too. You'll receive an annual holiday allowance, and you can buy additional holiday. We also offer other benefits that will help your money go further such as season ticket loans, cycle to work scheme, health cash plans, pay advance (where you can access some of your pay before pay day) as well access to a great range of discounts from hundreds of other retailers. And if you ever need it there is also an employee assistance programme.

Moments that matter are as important to us as they are to you which is why we give up to 26 weeks’ pay for maternity or adoption leave and up to 4 weeks’ pay for paternity leave.

Please see www.sainsburys.jobs for a range of our benefits (note, length of service and eligibility criteria may apply).
