Job Description

The Sainsbury’s Commercial Proposition Team is a centre of challenge and support across Food Commercial driving aligned decision-making and enabling delivery of our strategic goals. We work with the commercial teams to plan and deliver change across price, range and cost of goods.

As Cost of Goods Optimisation Project Manager, you’ll support category teams to make strategic decisions by structuring the hypotheses, supporting with analysis, capturing learnings for future initiatives to be shared across the team and wider Commercial division. This role offers the opportunity to drive meaningful change within our business, delivering value is our top priority and is at the heart of our corporate strategy.


You will need to be a great communicator for this role as you will be dealing with stakeholders at all levels from diverse functions such as buying, technical, supply chain, finance, and product development to deliver great value and quality to our customers.


More about the role:

  • Understand the current strategies and existing category knowledge
  • Identify and validate hypothesis for cost opportunities
  • Gather, analyse and triangulate data to identify key points
  • Clear communication (oral and written) of implications
  • Promote a culture of constructive challenge to drive opportunities cross functionally
  • Construction of clear and compelling presentations and supporting documentations
  • Using project management principles, plan and communicate with all relevant stakeholders following governance processes
  • Use a clear and convincing presentation style to engage others and generate commitment
  • Act as a point of stakeholders to ensure alignment
  • Continually seek feedback from stakeholders and share ideas with the team to modify and improve approach
  • Continually build and modify approach to cost of goods management
  • Provide ad hoc support to categories teams as required
  • Support other teams members in delivery of tasks
  • Build sources of business and industry contacts and knowledge and share with the wider team
  • Ensure learning is captured for future processes and shared proactively across the wider team
  • Act as an ambassador for the COGS Optimisation programme across the Commercial division


More about you:

  • Able to analyse data and generate clear and structured insight to identify strategic issues
  • Curiosity and hypothesis led thinking
  • Excellent stakeholder management, influencing and communication skills up to Senior Management/ Director level
  • Strong process management, with experience of working collaboratively
  • Passion for retail markets, familiar with customer, market, competition and financial insights
  • Able to analyse data and generate clear and structured insight to identify strategic issues
  • Balanced approach to decision making in the face of multiple, and sometimes conflicting, demands
